“It’s so much more than a plant sale,” says Woodside-Atherton Garden Club spokesperson Anne Cunningham. “This year’s sale has blossomed into a whole plant festival.” The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 24, in the native plant garden of the Woodside Library at 3140 Woodside Road in Woodside.
Garden club members have assembled thousands of plants, including California natives, roses, vegetables and herbs, trees, shrubs, and plants that attract pollinators, such as butterflies, hummingbirds, bees and bats.
Members have spent the past year propagating plants from their own gardens. Barbara Tuffli will offer rooted cuttings and grafted plants from her famous camellia garden. Other members will bring plants they have assembled from around the world. A collection of containers for flower arrangers will also be for sale.
Recognizing the interest in growing your own vegetables, kitchen garden plants for sale will include herbs, lettuce, beans, shallots, leeks, peppers and tomatoes, all organically grown.
Flora Grubb, owner of Flora Grubb Gardens in San Francisco, will give a talk on “Durable design in a Mediterranean climate” at noon. Throughout the day, there will be flower arranging demonstrations. There will also be two educational displays: “California oaks and what to plant under them,” and “pollinators in the garden.”
A garden boutique will feature gifts for Mother’s Day and gifts for the gardener.
Money raised from the sale will support the philanthropic programs of the Woodside-Atherton Garden Club, including the upkeep of the Woodside Library native plant garden. For more information, call 366-4826.
