It is astonishing that Caltrain would cut train service in order to save $160,000 per year. Is there not ONE overpaid, useless employee they could fire instead?

This story from Bay City News has a major error.
"Caltrain, which serves an estimated 38,000 people every weekday..."
The 38,000 figure represents boardings. As virtually all weekday riders are round-trip passengers CalTrain only serves about half that number - 20,000 - each day.

Most freeway traffic consists of round-trip commuters. By your count, do the freeways really only serve half the number of cars that use them?

By my count I just present the facts, not conjecture.
38,000 riders would account for 38,000 round-trips or 76,000 one way train trips or car trips.
38,000 boardings mean 19,000 round-trips or 38,000 one way train trip or car trips.

"As virtually all weekday riders are round-trip passengers"
While I generally agree, I'd like to point out I used Caltrain five times last month.
All one way.
It's a great service.
