"Rapture" Author Barbara Rossing Appears May 6

Original post made by Linda Gulker, Menlo Park: Central Menlo Park, on Apr 25, 2007

Author and theologian the Rev. Barbara R. Rossing makes an exclusive Peninsula appearance on Sunday, May 6 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Menlo Park. She will address “Apocalypse Now: A Word of Hope for a Warring, Warming World.”

The evening begins at 6:00 pm with a reception, followed by Rossing’s talk and discussion at 6:30. There is no charge, and all are welcome.

Rossing is the author of the best seller, The Rapture Exposed: The Message of Hope in the Book of Revelation. She says rapture theology is “nuts” and that it’s time to say “no” to “left behind” fiction. The central message of the Book of Revelation, she says, is "God's will is not to destroy our world but to heal it."

An avid hiker and environmentalist, Rossing has worked as a ranger at Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado, a chaplain to Harvard Divinity School, and a pastor at the Holden Village retreat center in Washington. Currently on sabbatical from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, she is writing a book on ecology and apocalypse.

Rossing’s appearance is sponsored by The Beatitudes Society, a non-profit organization which develops and sustains emerging Christian leaders at seminaries and divinity schools. Palo Alto residents the Rev. Frannie Hall-Kieschnick, a Priest Associate at Holy Trinity, and her husband, Michael Kieschnick, founded the organization in 2005. For more information about Rossing’s appearance, call (650) 289-9555.
