Menlo council study session tonight: Should homeowners pay for new sidewalks?

Original post made on Apr 30, 2013

To pave or not to pave? Many residents of the Allied Arts neighborhood answer "not," but during tonight's Menlo Park council meeting, the city will examine requiring sidewalk installation for some home renovations.

They(Allied Arts area) can't have it all. Give up on the sidewalks or the Stanford project.

Our town's own website defines itself as: "Menlo Park, a Tree City USA community, is a quiet yet vibrant city of pleasant, tree-lined neighborhoods and friendly people." It seems very clear that this proposal outlines a plan to "pave over" exactly what makes our town the unique jewel it has been since its first incorporation in 1874 and reincorporation in 1927.
Squelching this proposed plan will help prevent Menlo Park from becoming another Campbell or Fremont or Mountain View or Redwood City (and all the other cities sited to have Frontage Improvement Ordinances in the report).
In the case of Allied Arts Neighborhood, there are no safety issues, as evidenced by a 25-yr. pedestrian/car accident-free record. With regards to proposed sidewalks in Allied Arts, it's abundantly clear that continuing to maintain Menlo Park's beauty, charm and safety, requires no money and no turmoil — it just requires the Council to say no.
