Atherton mayor endorses newcomer for council over incumbent

Original post made on Sep 30, 2020

Atherton Mayor Rick DeGolia has endorsed Diana Hawkins-Manuelian, who is challenging incumbents Elizabeth Lewis and Cary Wiest for one of the town's two open council seats in the Nov. 3 election. DeGolia's motivation: Hawkins-Manuelian opposes a controversial proposal for the town to detach from the Menlo Park Fire Protection District.

"I am disappointed that Rick is making false statements about my position," Wiest

DeGolia is absolutely correct. I have watched every minute of this movie and Wiest was the instigator of the attempt to detach from the Fire District and has kept this ill considered and selfish effort going for over four years. Weist is not only a Robin Hood is reverse by attempting to steal money and fire services from East Palo Alto and Menlo Park but he is also stupid in that what he proposes will not lower the taxes of Atherton residents by a single penny.

Hawkins-Manuelian will be a much better informed Council member with a constructive agenda.

I really like https://www.christine4council2020.com. I like the fact that she will bring new blood to the town. We need her to bring in a new perspective. I am surprised the Almanac hasn't written much about Christine David. I have heard Lewis & DeGolia have been telling a number of people to support the new person that has never even been on one board. I have fear it is just to pad the vote at meetings. Will our vote even count if the counsil brings in someone that has there agenda?

I have met with her and I can assure you that Diana will walk to her own drum and not be beholden to or controlled by anyone else on the council.

The Weekly has kindly allowed two of the three misguided Atherton Town Council members who continue to demand that Atherton be treated differently than the rest of the Fire District. to publish an Opinion Piece accusing "the Mayor and at least one candidate (for Town Council) of misleading readers about the position of the town." These three 1% ers want a tax refund paid for by the losers and suckers.

Their misguided premise is that "The question involves the unusually high cost of those (fire) services to Atherton."

They are operating from a misguided premise.

Emergency services are not a metered service like water and electricity.

Emergency services are just like police services, national defense, public schools, public health, CHP etc and in our society we have decided that those services will be paid for by property and income taxes therefore the wealthy 1% pay far more FOR ALL OF THOSE SERVICES than do the residents of East Palo Alto.

Arguing how much more they pay for a particular public service is a meaningless discussion. Just imagine how much more Atherton residents pay for our national defense than do the poorer citizens of our country - and Atherton has never asked for more national defense for Atherton. Atherton pays much more per enrolled Atherton student in the SUHSD as do the residents of Menlo Park but these crazies never acknowledge that fact.

The basis of this problem a total lack of understanding of the philosophical basis of our tax systems by Wiest, Widmer and Lempres.

If instead Wiest, Widmer and Lempres want to continue to pursue their false narrative then they should produce comparable numbers for the cost of providing all the other public services, one by one, to Atherton vs how much Atherton residents pay for each of those services.

The public school one is an easy one to get both cost per student enrolled in the public schools and the taxes paid by Atherton residents to the school districts. At least everybody in Atherton gets fire services while few Atherton residents enjoy the benefits of a public school education.

I predict that Wiest, Widmer and Lempres will meet this challenge with a stoney silence.

Wiest is a selfish, cancerous presence on the Town Council who needs to be defeated.

Widmer and Lempres are, sadly, his unwitting allies. Their time will come.

VOTE CHRISTINE DAVID
My thoughts please if you live in Atherton or know someone that does take the time to read.
I am voting for Christine David for several reasons:

https://www.christine4council2020.com

1) Christine David truly cares about people, listens, and takes into account what they have to say. If I was sick she would be the type of person to drop off the chicken soup. Old school caring.
2) Christine has spent 8 (eight) years on different boards really taking into account what the Atherton community wants. Your voices will be heard that is for sure. Your voice will matter. One of the other candidates running has never served on a single board but is backed by two candidates. That makes me wonder if it will end up being a 3 to 2 vote on most items. I am not saying she shouldn't run in the future I would just like to see her on a few boards fist serving her time in this community like Christine has. It shows years of caring not just one election.
3) A number of the current candidates when they first ran believed in term limits so we would always bring in a new perspective, and fresh ideas. Now that they are running for a number of terms term limits only applied to others. Another reason why I like Christine David. She is open to new ideas. She is endorsed by two council members but they are not going out getting her signatures. She is and does not want to put herself in a situation that she would feel owing to anyone.
4) I believe in a running river. Not sitting water. I feel she is a breath of fresh air with new ideas, and her years of service and not really being heard by the current council needs to change. Have you ever worked so hard on something and found out your voice never mattered? They were going to do what they wanted to do anyway. I myself have felt this way. That is one of many reasons I am voting for Christine. Plus she has no issues meeting with people directly. She meets things head-on. Right is right and keeps things honest and above board.
Any questions just call or email her. She is a stand-up person with what matters most INTEGRITY.
:)
