I enjoyed reading this article on our local restaurant institution passing into the younger generation’s hands. There was an omission that struck me however, and that is the amount of credit that is due to Margaret MacNiven for Buck’s success
While it is true that Jamis ran the restaurant when his and Margaret’s boys were little, Margaret increasingly became the force behind the cafe and the face behind the hostess stand. The fact is that Jamis and Margaret have run their family businesses as a team for decades. It’s long past time that society ignore the professional contributions of female family members, whatever the capacity. In Buck’s case, Margaret has both direct and indirectly contributed to its success.
As an aside to my comment, the lovely picture of the MacNiven men - including Tyler’s son Aden - should at least have mentioned that Margaret and Jamis also have TWO granddaughters: Both of whom were being cared for by Margaret at the time of this photo shoot!

I was at Buck's today and also texting Nancy by chance (comment above). I love the boys and I'm sure they are going to be great great great dads to girls. I'm the middle of 5 girls and my USAF dad, Major Tom (he ended up LT.Col.) was such a great dad to girls. Margaret was so instrumental too, the whole family is lovely. She had 3 boys, I have 2 boys, and the boys are going to do a great job. Margaret was sooooo great with the staff and a really lovely presence every time I was there. She did an amazing job running that place with Jamis. Everyone wishes them such good fortunes. I bet the first born of the grandkids will work there one day, it was always so nice how many young girls from WES and WHS they gave a first job. Loved all the gals - LaShawn, Rachel, Patsy, Myshel - all of them, and Marcos and Devin of course. What a family it has been. And the old and new staff is lovely as well. Loved the two new hostess and waiter there today. I look forward to the great food - today I had Impossible Burger protein style (lettuce wrap). It rivaled in and out. Next time I'll make it double double protein animal style (they do the onion and sauce so it was close to animal). X O
