During an open question-and-answer session at the Woodside Bakery in Menlo Park on Aug. 15, Menlo Park Mayor Kirsten Keith and local Assemblyman Marc Berman, representing District 24, discussed local problems with constituents while sipping coffee and nibbling pastries.

The event came during a recess of the state Assembly. Mr. Berman says that when the Assembly re-adjourns Aug. 21 in Sacramento, discussions will focus on housing policy. He said that among bills expected to be discussed are Senate Bill 3, a $3 billion housing bond measure that would go before voters in November 2018.

In April, Mr. Berman voted for Senate Bill 1, which will raise $5.2 billion annually in fees for transportation infrastructure such as roads and bridges statewide. It was signed by Gov. Jerry Brown later that month.

Members of the public who attended asked a range of questions, expressing concerns about affordable housing, local congestion, education equity and public employee pension funding.

Multiple members also encouraged Mr. Berman to support Senate Bill 562, which would create a single-payer health care system in the state.

Others encouraged him to pursue a statewide ban on “pig scramble” events, such as the controversial Woodside pig scramble — a rodeo event in which kids chase and grab pigs — that is hosted by the Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County.

  1. It’s wonderful that events like this occur. Kudo’s to Marc Berman and Kirsten Keith for making this dialogue open and available to the public. With a host of common issues spilling over across borders, more joint meetings between various jurisdictions may help to find solutions that are mutually acceptable on regional basis. Thank you for all you do throughout the year. It is acknowledged and appreciated.

What? Nobody asked Assemblyman Berman to remove Judge Persky or shield Sanctuary cities from ICE? Maybe at the next event!
