All 6 MP candidates took money from the Big Developer

Original post made by June Benito, Menlo Park: Belle Haven, on Nov 4, 2006

What a sorry state of affairs. The biggest MP developer has spread his money around so that when his project out in Bohannon Industrial Park comes before the council, he will have have friends reviewing his plans.

This is what happens when a city is run by slate politics. So clean. So tidy. So few choices. When will we see some truly independant residents run for council?

We, as a city have become ugly.

Whereas Duboc,Winkler and Boyle have taken the great majority of their contributions from developers, and real estate interests, Robinson, Cline and Bressler have each taken only the $2000.00 the Bohannon has contributed to all six candidates. Mr. Bohannon made it quite clear in his viewpoint article in the Almanac, that this contribution was solely to allow each candidate to have some funds available to get their views out before the public.

Mr. Bohannon is a Menlo Park resident and not an outside developer. He is unique in other ways. It probably would have been better if Robinson, Cline and Bressler had not accepted his contributions, but considering the conditions publicly announced by Bohannon, it doesn't seem at all to be leading to the conflicts of interests that will occur if and when he has a project before council.

Just because Bohannon reported giving the money, doesn't mean that all candidates accepted the money. There is continuing discussion in several campaigns about whether or not to accept it. I do not know the final resolution, but it's not fair to presume the money was accepted by all candidates.

The Bohannon donations were reported by the press after the press read the Form-497's ("Late Donation Report") filed by Bohannon as required by law. Within so many days of the election, donors who give sufficiently large sums must report those sums within 24hrs of "giving" them, which presumably is the date on the check.

At the time the article appeared in the press, at least two campaigns had not even received the check in the mail and were completely unaware of the donations until reading about them in the paper.

I think this shows how smart David Bohannon is:

(A) For feeling queasy about the company he was keeping with the Boyle-Duboc-Winkler slate; and

(B) For not putting all his eggs in the B-D-W basket like the other developers. The developers are betting big that B-D-W will sweep. If the challengers take even one seat, the developers had better hope the new council majority doesn't believe in political payback.
