After President Donald Trump on June 1 withdrew the U.S. from the Paris climate-change agreement, Menlo Park Mayor Kirsten Keith announced the next day that she had joined mayors of more than 175 U.S. cities in a petition affirming mayoral support for strong local sustainability measures.
The signing mayors agreed to increase investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency, buy electric cars and trucks, and increase efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Ms. Keith said the city will stick to its goals to curb carbon emissions and promote sustainability.
The city's goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 27 percent from the 2005 levels by 2020. In addition, local environmental nonprofit Menlo Spark has the goal to reduce carbon emissions citywide to zero by 2025.
