"We don't know exactly why this occurred, but this isn't the first time we have responded to a significant vehicle accident involving this unprotected drainage ditch," Fire Chief Harold Schapelhouman of the Menlo Park Fire Protection District said in a statement. "We'll be talking to (the state Department of Transportation) about that. Over the years we've advocated for various safety improvements on this stretch of roadway."
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact Menlo Park Traffic Officer Brent Hughes at (650) 330-6300.
