Future Stanford teammates Elena Oglivie and Kami Miner each scored seven points as the U.S. rallied from a two-set deficit to beat Poland, 14-25, 18-25, 25-16, 29-27, 15-13 and earn the fifth-place trophy of the FIVB U20 Volleyball World Championships in Kortrijk, Belgium on Sunday.
Reigning AVCA National Freshman of the Year Emily Londot of Ohio State led the U.S. with 17 points.
Miner, an incoming freshman, is the team’s setter and team captain. Oglivie is an outside hitter and is a rising sophomore at Stanford.
“I think this has been an awesome experience for all of us,” Miner said. “It’s been such an honor to be playing with this group of girls.”
Oglivie recorded five of her points on kills and two on service aces. Miner had three kills, an ace and three blocks. They combined for 17 digs. Miner added 20 assists.
“I think from the start of the tournament we had great team chemistry and that carried us through,” Miner said. “And I think that’s what showed up the most in this last match going five sets; that heart and that will to win. I’m super proud of my team.”
Stanford opens it season with a pair of road games. The Cardinal play at Villanova at 4 p.m. on Aug. 27 and will be at Temple the following day.
Stanford hosts Florida on Aug. 31 at 5 p.m. in its home opener.
Italy won the world title with a three-set sweep of Serbia. Russia beat host Netherlands in five sets to place third.
