A service to remember former Menlo Park fire chief Bob Whitney is set for 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, at Alta Mesa Memorial Park at 695 Arastradero Road in Palo Alto, according to Rob Silano, a board member of the Menlo Park Fire Protection District.

Mr. Whitney died Nov. 29, his daughter Robin Carlson told the Almanac. He was 92.

Mr. Whitney began his Menlo Park Fire Protection District career in 1946, and ascended through the ranks to serve as fire chief from 1972 to 1978, according to the fire district’s website.

The Friday service will include a ringing of fire bells – known as a bell ceremony – and military honors, Mr. Silano said in an email.

Following the service, family and friends plan to gather for refreshments at Mr. Whitney’s home at 243 Oakhurst Place in the Suburban Park neighborhood of Menlo Park.
