Sign-up deadline Friday for free course on county government's workings

San Mateo County is offering a free class to those who live or work in the county and are interested in learning all about local government and local officials. It's called Civics 101.

Those interested in the 10-week, once-a-week course need to register by Friday, Sept. 5. Students must be 18 or older.

The class will meet at various locations on Tuesdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m., and will include information on how tax dollars are spent and many of the programs and services that San Mateo County provides. Participants will have a chance to meet local officials and get behind-the-scenes tours of county facilities. Two Saturday field trips are planned.

The program runs from Sept. 16 to Nov. 18.  A full schedule will be given to participants at the first meeting. For an application go to the county website and scroll to the bottom of the page. Directions are on the form.
