Menlo Park: Man robs Rubio's restaurant at gunpoint

A man wearing a white mask and carrying a pistol robbed Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill restaurant at 515 El Camino Real shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, and got away with about $900 in cash, police said.

There were five employees in the restaurant at the time of the incident. No one was injured, said Nicole Acker of the Menlo Park Police Department.

Restaurant employees were going through closing routines at about 10:07 p.m. when a slender man entered the restaurant carrying a black automatic pistol and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, black gloves and the mask, police said.

The man ordered the employees in the dining area and the kitchen to the floor and walked to the back office, police said. The office safe was open with cash register trays nearby, police said.

The man took a bank bag containing about $700 and about $200 from the cash register trays and quickly left the restaurant in the direction of Middle Avenue, police said.

Police are not ruling out a connection with the July 30 closing-time robbery of about $1,000 from Applewood To Go, Ms. Acker said. That incident also involved a masked man with a gun who ordered employees to the floor, though in that incident, the robber wore a black mask.
