Open space district bond measure picks up yes votes

The latest vote count shows that Measure AA, the $300 million bond measure for the open space district, has picked up a lot more yes votes.

As of 6 p.m. Thursday, the yes votes totaled 52,937 and the no votes, 25,613.

To pass, the measure must win support from two-thirds of the voters. Two-thirds of the current total vote is 52,367. That means that the current yes vote is 570 votes over that two-thirds threshold.

There are still some ballots yet to count, including provisional and mail-in ballots dropped off on Election Day. If two out of three of the remaining ballots are yes votes, the measure will pass.

The current vote count by county is:

● San Mateo County: 17, 167 yes and 9,005 no.

● Santa Clara County: 35,770 yes and 16,608 no.

In Santa Cruz County, where only a small rural area is in the district, only one vote was cast and it was for the measure.

The district wants the authority to issue up to $300 million in bonds to improve, preserve and restore its properties, and to purchase land needed to connect trails and preserve plant and animal habitats.
