Missing man found after nighttime Portola Valley search

Search near Corte Madera School included helicopter patrol

A helicopter from the San Jose Police Department patrolled the skies above the southern border of Portola Valley Wednesday evening (April 2), as a team of law enforcement officers from Santa Clara and San Mateo counties were looking for a missing person who had been reported absent from his home in Los Altos Hills at around 4:30 p.m.

Residents of the area near Alpine Road and Indian Crossing were initially asked to shelter in place, although the advisory was lifted before the episode concluded with the announcement that the man had been found.

The 49-year-old man, described as Asian and wearing a blue parka with a hood, was found in Los Altos by local police and taken to a hospital for medical evaluation, according to Sgt. Andrea Urena of the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office. Asked at about what time police found the man, Sgt. Urena said she didn't have that information.

Sgt. Urena said she also didn't know why residents were asked to shelter in place. The Almanac was unable to ascertain from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office in time for this story why the shelter-in-place advisory was issued.

The Santa Clara County deputies had asked for assistance in the search from San Mateo County deputies. The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office had 10 deputies involved, including those patrolling Portola Valley and Woodside, the street-crime unit, and the coastal unit, Deputy Rebecca Rosenblatt told the Almanac. Deputies arrived on the scene at 6:15 p.m. and left by 8:30, she said.

The missing man had been seen near Corte Madera school, Sgt. Urena said.

An alert issued by the San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services asked residents near the school to stay inside their homes at about 7:30 p.m. That request was withdrawn at about 8:06 p.m., Ms. Rosenblatt said.
