What is School without Recess

Uploaded: Sep 25, 2020
When our son started school virtually one of the biggest downsides for him was not having a traditional recess with his friends. His recess right now is only 20 minutes so it is easily filled up with us chatting about his morning and eating a quick snack. It is nice, but compared to his memories of recess at school with his friends, it is just not as fun.

I’m not an elementary school kid and his sisters are not his school friends. So instead of comparing this 20 minute break to a traditional “recess,“ we’ve started thinking about it simply as a transition from one part of the day to the next. Similar to when we would talk about his day while driving to or from school. It is a subtle change in our thinking, but it has made a big difference.

I am grateful for these 20 minutes every morning that we can hang out together. And getting rid of the “recess“ label has really helped us all enjoy this time so much more.
