Palo Alto quietly gets new evening food truck market

Uploaded: Aug 22, 2014
Palo Alto quietly got a new dinner-time food truck option late last month, filling the hole left by popular Edgewood Eats' closure in 2013.

Moveable Feast, a food truck market operator based in San Jose, launched the Thursday market July 17 at 4290 El Camino Real (in front of the Crowne Plaza Hotel).

Moveable Feast has operated a smaller, lunch-time market on Tuesdays at Palo Alto Square since 2012. The evening market slot was long occupied by Edgewood Eats before it was shut down.

Moveable Feast founder Ryan Sebastian ? who himself started out as a food truck operator, running a karaoke ice cream truck dubbed TreatBot ? told me in January that he had long lusted after the night market option in Palo Alto, but when he got into the local market, Edgewood Eats was "sort of the de facto Monday night food truck (gathering)."

"Lunch time is very different," he said. (The Palo Alto Square market mostly caters to businesses in the surrounding complex.) "We didn't want to impose on that event; we thought it was a great community event."

TreatBot even participated in Edgewood Eats for some time.

"It was a great community gathering space. That's the type of stuff that's really important to us. I look at this as a way to build community," he said. "We would love to do a dinner time community event in Palo Alto."

Fast forward a few months, and here they are.

This Thursday's market featured an outdoor bar and trucks like BBQ Kalibi, Fish Taco Wabo, Got Curry?, Fairycakes, Gold Rush Eatery and Road Dogs.

Check Moveable Feast's Twitter or Facebook for regular updates on what trucks will be at the Palo Alto market.

I went to this tonight with my husband. It was great, we had a fun time. I had some sort of crazy Korean spicy chicken burrito thing that I loved. There were 6 food trucks and I was worried there would be a big crowd, but there were only 30-40 people there ordering food, so service was fast. So thank you, Elena for your post, it made a boring old Thursday night an adventure.

Palo Alto Resident: That's wonderful! So happy to hear that you enjoyed it -- and avoided crowds/lines! Do you remember what truck you got the burrito from?
