Spelling bee champ at La Entrada

Seventh-grader John McGrory won the La Entrada 2013 Spelling Bee on Jan. 11 by spelling "futilitarian" correctly. (A futilitarian believes that human effort is futile. John must not be one.) Eighth-grader Benjamin Strehlow was runner-up. John advances to the San Francisco Chronicle semifinal spelling bee in February. Grade-level winners were Mitra Pezeshki (sixth grade), Amanda Younes (fifth grade), and Georgia Wluka (fourth grade).
