Menlo Park holds public hearings on housing plan

Bookmark and Share
Menlo Park's City Council will soon take a look at the proposed update to the city's housing plan.

The city has no choice about adding enough high-density housing zones to accommodate space for 1,000 units as part of a lawsuit settlement in May over its non-compliance with state law. While the city is not required to actually build the units, the settlement dictates that it must provide incentives for developers to do so.

State law requires cities to assess and plan to meet their fair share of regional housing needs, which includes affordable housing, every seven years. Menlo Park hasn't met the state requirements since 1992, but now has only until Oct. 31 to send a draft update to the state's Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD).

Go to tinyurl.com/MP-housing to peruse the proposed update. The council will hold its review at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the council chambers at the Civic Center at 701 Laurel St.
