Around Town: Fogarty winery celebrates summer solstice

Thomas Fogarty Winery & Vineyards will celebrate the summer solstice from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, with vineyard hikes and chardonnay tasting at 19501 Skyline Blvd. in Woodside.

Not normally accessible to the public, Thomas Fogarty Winery will be sending guests out into the vineyards, with vistas overlooking Stanford, the San Francisco Bay and Silicon Valley, to taste the chardonnay.

Winemaker Michael Martella and associate winemaker Nathan Kandler will be in the vineyard during the tasting to discuss the wines.

Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy hiking shoes. Visitors may also enjoy wines in the tasting room if they don't care to hike. Cost is $20 per person. Visit web site www.fogartywinery.com or call 851-6777 for reservations in advance.

Riekes Center holds Olympic Day event

The Riekes Center for Human Enhancement will celebrate Olympic Day with a multi-sport festival from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the center, 3455 Edison Way in North Fair Oaks.

Free and open to the public, the event is meant to engage the local community and encourage Olympic ideals such as health, fitness, perseverance and respect. Participants can play and learn about archery and table tennis, and such wheelchair sports as basketball, fencing, volleyball and rugby.

Pizza and live music will be provided.

Those expected to attend are Olympic athletes Chris Dorst (water polo, 1984) and Marybeth Dorst (swimming, 1980), and Paralympic athletes Sebastian De Francesco (table tennis, 1984-2000), Steven Toyoji (track & field, 2008) and Sharon Clark Kelleher (wheelchair tennis, 2000-2004).

The event is one of about 700 taking place between June 22 and July 1 to celebrate Olympic Day, created in 1948 to commemorate the modern Olympic Games.

Healthy food forum

The future of accessing healthful and sustainable food locally will be the topic for a forum to be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, June 18, in the Redwood Room of the Veterans Memorial Senior Center, 1455 Madison Ave. in Redwood City.

"Carrots and Sticks on the Menu: Local strategies to support healthy food environments" is the eighth in a series of health forums that began in 2011.

Heather Wooten of ChangeLab Solutions will talk about how accessing healthful food builds resilient communities. The forum is presented by Sustainable San Mateo County in partnership with the Sierra Club Loma Prieta chapter and San Mateo County Health System.

The public is invited to attend the forum, which includes a light dinner and refreshments.

Library book sale

The Friends of the Menlo Park Library will hold a book sale from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 17, across the library's parking lot, next to the gym in the Menlo Park Civic Center. The library is located at 800 Alma St. in Menlo Park.

The sale will include books on such topics as art and collectibles, biography, cooking, history, mystery, science fiction and fantasy, and religion and philosophy. There will be a selection of children's books.

The Friends of the Menlo Park Library is seeking volunteers. Call 330-2521 for more details.

Relay for Life

The American Cancer Society's annual fundraiser, Relay For Life of Menlo Park, will be held at Burgess Park on Saturday, Aug. 4. Individuals, families, community groups, corporations and small businesses may participate.
