'Flash mob' shows how to move at Laurel School

Bookmark and Share
In an era of growing childhood obesity, second-graders at Laurel School are learning how much fun staying fit can be: They're moving their bodies to high-energy music.

Thanks to a Jeanie Ritchie Grant from the Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation, all second-graders are exploring balance, motion, and the joy of dance with Deb Stevens-Sterling, a hip-hop and Zumba dance teacher.

On Feb. 9, the kids entertained bake sale goers on campus with a "flash mob" dance to the tune of Beyonce's "Move Your Body."

Principal Linda Creighton said they had been practicing the dance for several weeks — a four-minute workout that has been a component of First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" initiative to fight childhood obesity.

"The 'Move your Body' routine promotes dance as a fun way to exercise, stay at a healthy weight, and keep moving (and balancing!) your body," Ms. Creighton explained in an email.
