John Maltbie returns as county manager
• He will serve as interim manager
following resignation of David Boesch.
Standing in as county manager in San Mateo County until the Board of Supervisors recruits a new manager will be John Maltbie, a 20-year veteran of that office until he retired in 2008.
The supervisors announced Mr. Maltbie's appointment Tuesday, Nov. 15, after a closed session. Mr. Maltbie will take office Dec. 1.
He will replace David S. Boesch, who succeeded him in 2008 and who, on Nov. 4, announced his resignation, giving the board an 11-day notice. Mr. Boesch cited philosophical differences with the Board of Supervisors and said he was acting "in the best interests of the organization."
Mr. Boesch, who came to the job after seven years as the city manager in Menlo Park, also said he would be available until Dec. 31 to work with the county in the transition of responsibilities to an interim county manager.
Mr. Maltbie will inherit a budget of $1.75 billion, a budget about $500,000 larger than when he left.
Negotiating a contract to compensate Mr. Maltbie for his interim work will be county supervisors Adrienne J. Tissier and Dave Pine. They are expected to bring the contract to the full board at a special meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29.
In looking for a permanent manager, the supervisors will conduct a nationwide search in a recruitment effort that is likely to take several months, county spokesman Marshall Wilson said.
The board expects Mr. Maltbie's "extensive knowledge and experience will help the county continue its mission of delivering excellent services to the community while seeking ways to reduce costs," Mr. Wilson said.
"I am looking forward to serving the residents of San Mateo County to the best of my abilities," Mr. Maltbie said in the statement.
