Portola Valley town official leaves abruptly

The staff at Town Hall in Portola Valley is one person smaller with the abrupt departure of Assistant Town Manager Janet McDougall after four years with the town.

An email to Ms. McDougall yielded the following reply: "The Assistant Town Manager position has been vacated. If you need assistance, please contact Angela Howard, the town manager."

In a telephone interview, Ms. Howard acknowledged that Ms. McDougall "is no longer with the town."

Asked if Ms. McDougall left voluntarily, Ms. Howard responded that "it's a personnel matter and I'm not really at liberty to give out details. It's not that big a deal. People come and go all the time."

Asked if Ms. McDougall had given notice, Ms. Howard replied: "I'm not going to discuss it with you."

Ms. McDougall, reached by phone at her home, said she had no comment other than to say that she left her office after half a day's work on Friday, Aug. 26.
