Around Town: 'Taste of Woodside' Aug. 21

The eighth annual Taste of Woodside, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Woodside/Portola Valley, will be held Sunday, Aug. 21, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Grace Memorial Courtyard of the Woodside Village Church.

During a wine sampling, featuring wines from Bartholomew Park, Thomas Fogarty, Martella, Ridge, and Woodside Vineyards, guests will place bids on silent auction items such as purses, jewelry, gift certificates, and scarves from Bali, said Barbara Schmidt, president of the Rotary Club.

Appetizers will be available from the Little Store in Woodside, Buck's of Woodside, and the Amigos Grill in Ladera.

Next, guests will partake of a salad from the Mountain House restaurant in Woodside, an entree of Cornish game hen prepared by Encore Performance Catering, and a slice of double chocolate mousse cake from the Woodside Bakery.

A live auction will be held for items such as vacations to Costa Rica or Bali, and a wine collection.

Proceeds will fund many Rotary projects, including in Bali and Guatemala. The church is at 3154 Woodside Road in Woodside.

Talk on history of recorded sound

Jerry McBride, head librarian of the Braun Music Library at Stanford, will talk on the "History of Recorded Sound" at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, in the Menlo Park council chambers in the Civic Center, 701 Laurel St.

He will discuss Stanford's collection of 300,000 items, including recordings of historic speeches and radio broadcasts.

Fire trucks relay

Local fire districts and departments will participate in the annual Peninsula Firefighters Burn Relay on Thursday, Aug. 18.

This 16-stop relay of antique and modern emergency vehicles starts in Sunnyvale and ends in San Francisco. It's scheduled to stop at Menlo Park's fire station No. 1 at 300 Middlefield Road at around 10:10 a.m.

Throughout the relay, firefighters will collect donations raised by fire and public safety agencies in the community, and present the funds to the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation, which helps burn survivors.
