Menlo School competes in mock trial
Menlo School beat state champion Hillsdale High School in the final round of the San Mateo County Mock Trial Championship, held in February. This is the third time in the last four years that Menlo School has won the county event, said Menlo School spokesperson Jill Kasser.
In March, the 25-student Menlo School team headed to the state championship in Irvine, California, where the team made it to the quarterfinals and garnered two commendations: Marjory Marquard won for best pretrial and Julia Heimark for best court clerk.
In mock trials, students play various roles within a courtroom.
The topic of this year's case was cyber-bullying and the First Amendment. The trial dealt with the issue of whether the new anti-bullying statute unlawfully prohibits protected speech, Ms. Kasser said.
The competition is organized by the Constitutional Rights Foundation, which aims to encourage youth to be active participants in society.
Craig Heimark is the attorney and head coach for the Menlo School team, and Dan Devitt is the teacher sponsor.
