Signup time for Pop Warner football

The Menlo-Atherton Vikings organization, incubator of local high school and college football talent for the past decade, has opened registration for the 2011 Pop Warner season.

Players, ages 5 to 15, may enroll. Early-bird signups run through March 31. Regular registration is from April 2 through May 31. Practice starts in August.

The early-bird fee is $275, but financial aid is available. For information, e-mail avenalb@yahoo.com before March 31.

Pop Warner competition includes various age and weight categories, and games are played on fall weekends at Menlo-Atherton High School and other Peninsula venues.

Viking cheer squads are expanding from two to four groups, and the organization is seeking more cheer coaches to stimulate sideline enthusiasm, said spokesman Jim Gallagher. An additional football coach is needed for the Tiny Mite (ages 5-6) division.

Vikings players have gone on to high school success at Menlo-Atherton, Woodside, Menlo School and Sacred Heart Prep, together with various West Catholic Athletic League teams, Gallagher said.

At the college level, former Vikings may be found on the rosters at Stanford, Yale, the University of San Diego, the College of San Mateo, San Francisco City College and Foothill College.
