This is about Cate and her special talents. Is a simple plaque or memorial too much? Get it done.
Why something as simple as putting a memorial plaque in front of memorial tree and/or painting "Cate's Corner" on the wall for a very loved young teacher is mind boggling. Enough with the excuses, our COMMUNITY Services Department needs to just do it already, for Cate and the community which she served.
Cate was my daughter's first teacher and one who will never be forgotten. Her death is still felt in our community and I'm sickened by the comments expressed in the article- "Michelle will keep coming around...". Her mother, Michelle is also a beloved member of our community and their family- as do all of ours- deserves a place to celebrate the life of a beautiful girl whose bright future was tragically taken too soon. Every time I rethink my decision not to send my children to the Gymnastics center at Burgess which stemmed from Michelle's firing and the center's sloppy cover-up, I read an article like this and my blood boils. Those in charge seem to be heartless and shallow and those that are supposed to be overlooking these powers-that-be need to revisit the concept of community.
I read the complete article and am stunned that all of the parties are this contentious. I have to say that holding up the daughter's honor over a dispute with the mother sounds petty.
How about having a 1 hr. meeting of everyone together -- with the completed sign + a hammer/drill on the table -- to negotiate where to post it.
Then just do it.
Or, if the parties cannot envision such a session, get the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center to mediate the meeting and stop the nonsense.
"...the Arrillaga family's agreement to fund the new facilities included a clause that nothing should be displayed on the walls..."
Does this line terrify anyone else? We, the taxpayers, paid for the bulk of this and other improvements to the Burgess campus with Measure T money. We are STILL paying, twice a year, with our property taxes. Not only did Arrillaga get his name on every public building -- a travesty in itself -- he established rules about what we, the residents of the city, can do with our public buildings.
What other ridiculous clauses were in this agreement? Feels as though Menlo Park sold the collective soul of its residents for a few million dollars.
I hope the community will solve the issues about erecting the memorial to this wonderful young woman
It seems to me the city IS trying to balance competing wants. Balancing the desire to recognize the nice young woman (I didn't know her) and not plastering city property with plaques naming every nice young woman, or man, who has ever worked for the city.
I believe memorials/plaques of any kind should be used sparingly and only for individuals who have made a significant impact on the entire Menlo Park community.
This is all on Karen Mihalek and Cherice Brandell. Concerned parents should corner both of these individuals and grill them for answers incessantly because they are the sole (or at least main) dissenters.
Almanac Online... I've had enough.. it's not hard to see how far left the readers of this publication really are.. funny how only the most liberal comments will not get deleted.. Wake UP!
wow -- I didn't see anything political in the discussion on this topic. The odd in-fighting about this memorial had nothing to do with liberal-conservative philosophies.
"finalizing the center's interior décor"
I was not aware chairs we considered décor.
The city want all building to have the arrillaga "clean look" in the future
Don't miss out on the discussion!
