Woodside to discuss next steps for its downtown plan, including community workshops

Original post made on Jul 22, 2013

Downtown Woodside can be a tough place to find a parking spot, make your way around town, have a picnic, or put on an art exhibit.

What we really need is a traffic light at the Canada Rd & Woodside Rd intersection. Most of the traffic problems in town are caused by congestion at that intersection.

I support changes to the Canada/Woodside intersection that improve safety. Half the time it's not clear whose "turn" it is to go next, and I feel like accidents are about to happen. I also don't want my children crossing that intersection on foot or bike for the same reason.

Perhaps long-term residents have figured out how to navigate the instersection more smoothly, but if half the traffic is from elsewhere... many probably feel like me.

Add an entry to Bucks on Canada Rd. and some traffic will be reduced.

Add restrooms and picnic area somewhere within walking distance, if feasible, for the bicycle tourists AND locals, and be happy we have such a lovely town and roads. It's a quandry where to put it, I know. Suggestions?

Woodside residents may want to take a lesson from other peninsula cities such as Palo Alto, Mountain View, Redwood City and Menlo Park: don't hire a consultant, don't have "visioning" sessions, don't radically upzone your downtown, don't create plans that are hostile to people driving and parking.
Take a drive along El Camino or Alma in these cities and you'll see what you'll get if you rezone for multi-story high-density mixed-use developments. This is urbanization, and the last thing Woodside needs.
In fact, if you like your town the way it is, do NOT rezone it!

I think a roundabout would be much better than a traffic light. There is plenty of room for that.

Roberts is quite charitable to cyclists by providing water and a restroom. I believe the businesses benefit greatly from the amount of cycle traffic, but some congestion at the intersection could be alleviated if the town provided water and bathrooms for cyclists way from the intersection - at the library or firestation, or near independence hall.

I agree with the roundabout suggestion.

I also agree with the comment about Canada Rd. & Woodside Rd. intersection. I drive through it almost daily, and almost daily there seems to be confusion over whose turn should go next.

I never thought about a roundabout, but it would appear to be a very good suggestion, especially when it comes to accommodating large groups of bicycle riders!

Thanks for making it, Josh!

Yes, a roundabout would be great!
