Sequoia Healthcare District continues support of Planned Parenthod

Original post made by Jack Hickey, Woodside: Emerald Hills, on Jan 8, 2013

A story published in today's Daily Post stated that "Planned Parenthood, in its annual report, says it performed 333,964 abortions in 2011, a record year for the nonprofit."
While I personally don't support Planned Parenthood, I have friends who do.
The Sequoia Healthcare District, on whose Board I serve, has provided $100's of thousands in Grants to Planned Parenthood using property tax dollars originally assessed to build operate and maintain Sequoia Hospital. They have a $30,000 Grant for Planned Parenthood in this years budget. They have budgeted a total $1,340,000 for all nonprofits in their Caring Community Grants Program. Web Link They continue to provide $millions in support annually to Sequoia Hospital which they no longer own.
The Sequoia Healthcare District must be dissolved.

Doesn't something like 97% of Planned Parenthood funds go for healthcare, predominantly women's healthcare?

So we have yet another man who knows what's best for women.

Katy, if you choose to support an organization which was responsible for 333,964 abortions in 2011 you have to live with that. I choose to support First Resort. Web Link
The issue here is whether the Sequoia Healthcare District should be using property tax dollars, originally assessed to build operate and maintain Sequoia Hospital, to support either of those organizations. As a Member of the Board of Directors for the past ten years, I have never suggested that the District should support my favorite charities. What they are doing is engaging in pseudo-philanthropy which was never intended by voters when they established the Sequoia Hospital District in 1946.

First resort lies to women, uses stalling tactics when they are at their most vulnerable; while they may do some good, their reprehensible tactics are repugnant to many. Essentially, they lie about offering abortion services. Significant legal action has resulted, along with laws to protect women from those lies.

Planned Parenthood -- 97% of their services are not about terminations: AFFILIATE MEDICAL SERVICES SUMMARY

- cancer screening and prevention (14.5 percent)
- STD testing for both men and women (38 percent)
- contraception (33.5 percent)
- other: tests and other pre-natal (10.4)

About 80 percent of Planned Parenthood's users are over age 20, and 75 percent have incomes below 150 percent of the poverty line. Planned Parenthood itself estimates it prevents more than 620,000 unintended pregnancies each year, and 220,000 abortions. It's also worth noting that federal law already forbids Planned Parenthood from using the funds it receives from the government for abortions.

Teen pregnancy rates are at an all time low. I'm sure that disappoints the few 'barefoot & pregnant' Neanderthals still out there, but that's too bad, isn't it?

Empowering women starts with reproductive rights.

Pick a fight with women and PP, Jack. See how well that worked out for Mitt Romney, Koman and others.

First Resort and their lies...

"Crisis pregnancy centers seek to dissuade women and girls from seeking abortions by walking them through alternative options, such as adoption. Not all of them are up front about their motives, and their indirection can delay a woman's decision-making until emergency contraceptives are no longer effective or until an abortion is illegal. There are obviously a range of approaches that these centers use; in the worst cases, a 2006 Congressional investigation found that centers led women to believe the falsehoods that abortion is linked to breast cancer, high rate of future infertility, and psychological effects akin to PTSD.

The activities of First Resort appeared to San Francisco city officials to occupy the more duplicitous end of this spectrum. San Francisco's city attorney says the non-profit center has paid to be the first Google result when a person searches for "abortion San Francisco." Although First Resort's website includes "pre and post abortion counseling" among its services, lists abortion as an option for unwanted pregnancy, and features a testimonial from a client who chose to have an abortion, First Resort CEO Shari Plunkett says the primary reason for its existence is to prevent abortions. And, crucially, nowhere on its website does First Resort disclose that it does not offer abortions or referrals to abortion providers. Omissions like these are at the core of the claim that the center misleads through false advertising."

Empowering women starts with reproductive rights.

The issue is; "Should the Sequoia Healthcare District use tax dollars, originally assessed to build operate and maintain Sequoia Hospital, to support charitable organizations?" Whether it is St. Anthony de Padua Dining Room, Planned parenthood, First Resort, etc. is irrelevant.

As for my choice of First Resort, I provided a web link to their site. It is left to the reader to decide if they are deserving of your support.

Jack: get real, you started out with an attack on Planned Parenthood. You led with "A story published in today's Daily Post stated that "Planned Parenthood, in its annual report, says it performed 333,964 abortions in 2011, a record year for the nonprofit."

You then hyped the reprehensible First Choice.

Suddenly, now you want it to be all about your pet peeve, some district thing.

Must be hard to get all those worms back in your can...

Besides a woman's reproductive freedom, what other issues set you out of the mainstream?

Title of this topic:
"Sequoia Healthcare District continues support of Planned Parenthod"
Planned Parenthood just happened to be the "poster child of the day".
I refrained from the use of terms like "reprehensible" to describe what Planned Parenthood has done because I realize that some people are comfortable with what they do.
Why don't you help get rid of the Sequoia Healthcare District? Read some of my other topics on the subject in this forum. Take my survey. Web Link

Why, thank you, Jack, I did notice both the title and body of your topic. Perhaps that's why I pointed out your opening sentence.

Play possum as you like, about your leading line, as well as the reprehensible First Choice.

Keep tilting at your windmill, as well. Leave women's health and reproductive choice out of it, or risk alienating some who possibly may otherwise view your odd crusade in a positive light.

Women's health is not a "poster child"
