Funds rejected by San Mateo County may pay for new Stanford trail network
Menlo Park, posted by Editor, The Almanac Online, on Sep 5, 2012 at 12:11 pm

Palo Alto and Stanford University are hoping to accelerate the city's bike plan and create an expansive trail network around the Stanford Dish by tapping into the $10.4 million sum originally intended to pay for a new trail at Alpine Road, but rejected by San Mateo County.

The "Dumbarton Link" is less than 1 mile, not the 27 miles that the article states. The missing section is between Bay Road in East Palo Alto and the Bayfront Expressway in Menlo Park.

Really surprised that this little trail is so controversial. It is too bad that Menlo Park is not pushing harder for this, since on the biggest user groups for this trail is Facebook employees bicycling to work from their homes in Palo Alto.

Facebook has promised to pay for half of the Dumbarton Link, if other funding could be found. If they hold up their part of the bargain, this could be a good way to stretch dollars:

Facebook should go ahead and pay for the whole thing. They should realize that Menlo Park is not interested in paying for infrastructure projects in the part of the city east of Hwy 101. East Palo Alto can't afford it. Even with their stock price tanking, this trail is still pocket change for Facebook.

Facebook committed to build the section of trail parallel to University Avenue regardless of other funding. This commitment is written in the development agreement with Menlo Park.

Facebook further agreed to help other initiatives to fund the remaining segment.

I thought the Bay Trail segment parallel to University between Bay Road and Bayfront Expressway was the entire "Dumbarton Link". Has Facebook committed to building this trail? Is there a schedule?

There is a section parallel to University. There is another section that will probably use what is currently the SFPUC access road. Then there is a section that goes over dirt and a bit of wetland. There will be a public forum next week to comment on the proposed design.
