Former Mayor: Reign of Terror Must End

Original post made by Bring in the National Guard, Atherton: other, on Jan 20, 2012

At the Atherton council meeting on Wednesday January 25, council member and former two-term mayor Kathy McKeithen made a heartfelt and public plea for help during the public comments section of the meeting.

She can no longer endure harassment for plainly and frankly stating her views on what is best for the town she serves.

Significantly, Ms. McKeithen is widely regarded as the most experienced and best council member Atherton has ever had. She serves no special interests, and has never accepted monies from unions or other special interest groups.

The former mayor detailed the following examples of harassment, and this is by no means an exhaustive list.

- An Atherton police raid on her home.
- Police cars circling her home on a regular basis.
- Attempts to interfere with her husband's livelihood.
- Attempts to bug her home that required professional bug sweeping services.

Significantly, she emphasized the attacks were not limited to her, but also her family.

A police force that retaliates against the elected representatives who are charged with managing it is something that cannot endure in the United States of America. It has happened in totalitarian regimes in the Soviet Union, China, Argentina, Cuba, North Korea, et al., but never before here.

This reign of terror has to end. Mayor Bill Widmer needs to protect this council member. If it requires asking the governor for the national guard, so be it. Liberty and freedom must prevail.

[Editor's note: Ms. McKeithen said in a phone interview that she did not refer to a police raid on her home. Also, the council meeting was on Jan. 18.]

When I saw the headline, I was sure you were going to say that McKeithen's reign of terror must end! I feel cheated! Have you calculated the legal fees, the personnel costs and the complete decline in civility that has mirrored her "reign" as a council member? I think she might be the cause, and there is no evidence yet thatshe is the cure. She should be term limited out- just as she campaigned for term limits when she first ran.

I believe Ms.McKeithen has become unhinged and obviously needs professional help. I am serious and not making a joke.

I am confused. Bring in the National Guard said, "At the Atherton council meeting on Wednesday January 25.."

Do you mean that McKeithen said this on Wednesday January 18, or are you predicting she will say this next week?

1. [Portion removed; refers to a post that has been removed.]

2. Publications need to stop using West Menlo Park as if it was a real city, instead of an area w/in an actual city.

3. Reign of Terror? Really? Does one think that is a wise term to use for this situation?

My mistake. It was January 18. I would request that the Almanac please correct this for me since I cannot.

takeiteasy…good point. Perhaps the police department can arrange for an involuntary committal? Might solve this problem, right?

No I would think it would be appropiate for her husband or family to do that. I would also think the Mayor and other council members might help given the uncomfortable and embarrassing outburst as it obviously was not right or rational. I feel sorry for her as a person.

I attended the council meeting, and don't recall that Ms. McKeithen mentioned a police raid on her home in her statement. In a telephone interview, Ms. McKeithen said she did not refer to such a raid.

Meanwhile, the Almanac is looking into some of the matters Ms. McKeithen cited in her statement for an article that will be published soon.

You might ask yourself who would bug the Mayor's house?

Renee, You might ask Ms. McKeithen if a police raid on her home did occur, I know she said she did not refer to such a raid. Also ask if the prowlers she spoke of in her backyard were dressed in commando/swat/seal type clothes?

It appears that the Almanac is now requiring posters to be Registered Users before they can post to this chain. I implore the Almanac to go even further. I urge the Almanac to require that all posters to all articles be Registered Users. Further, I urge the Almanac to require that all Registered Users be required to use their legal names.

I suspect that these despicable ad hominem and ad feminam attacks, posted by cowards because they have the protection of anonymity, would cease. This policy change by the Almanac would significantly improve the quality of public dialogue and discourse, while celebrating the First Amendment.
