Ladera barber Aram Chirkanian to put down the scissors after 50 years

Original post made on May 25, 2010

After 20 years living on a 38-foot yacht in Redwood City and 50 years cutting men's hair in Portola Valley, Woodside and Ladera -- in that order -- Aram Chirkanian is moving south to Ontario, just east of Los Angeles. ==B Photo by Michelle Le/The Almanac==

I started going to Aram to cut my hair when I was 5 or 6 years old, and I wound up hearing a very colorful perspective on life. Thanks for this story; I never knew about Aram's interesting background (although I have been hearing about his success with the ladies for thirty-something years!). Aram, we'll definitely miss you. Good luck!! -Jon

Aram cut my hair for at least 20 years. Besides the haircut, his philosophy (about anything and everything) was priceless. He will be sorely missed by everybody who came into contact with him. A fine gentleman who loved women and could never pass up looking at beautiful women.

Dad - Just as your friend's and customer's will miss you..... Your Son, Daughther In-Law and two Grandson's have missed you more! Since moving from Northern California to Southern California 15 years ago, I have been able to go back and forth and visit. But our heritage and my love for you say's it is time for you to be close to the only Chirkanians's left on the planet! So WE can care for you and enjoy more time together. You have two wonderful Grandson's (Zachary-8 and Cooper-5), a loving Daughther In-Law and your Son waiting to make sure you are safe, happy and not alone on your day's off! :)

As I read the article I remember the day's of my dad cutting hair in Portola Valley at the Curry Comb Barber Shop, and the families we grew up with - The Nash's from the store and Walter Jelock (Spelling may be wrong). I remember peeling apricots and the Ranch and shining shoe's at the shop - I even looked at my first Playboy there!

For the same reasons everyone will miss you.... We are glad you are coming.

My dad has always been able to make people feel comfortable (Not just the ladies). Some very promenant people have sat in my Dad's chair and everyone say's the same thing, "What a nice man he is and he treats me like a person - Call's me by my first name".

In a world where most are measured by wealth (the dollar) and society status my dad has left his mark in Portola Valley as a "Good Person" and someone who has offered wealth of inspiration to everyone he touched. At the end the day: "What you leave behind is your spirit and a kind heart".

I received a call from Chuck Harwood last week concerned that my Dad was gonna be okay... I hope all of you trust that this is NOT a scenario of bringing my dad down to Southern California and dropping him off at some home and leaving him there. It would be shortsided of anyone not to know that this is the next phase of my Dad's life and to enjoy his family, relax and watch his off spring grow to be fine men with his daily influences and life stories.

Since my dad is very active, he is moving into a 55 and older community. The complex is fantastic (Village on Green in Rancho Cucamonga, Ca) with an ambiance suitable for even the highest standards. He will be 4 miles from our home and will be looked after by more than just his family - I assure everyone!

We will be moving him on June 11, 2010. Should you wish to contact my Dad please send an e-mail to his address (thebigarmenian@aol.com).
I will make sure he gets the information and stay in contact with everyone.

Thanks to everyone for your spirit and your concern! See you soon Dad.... We love you!
