MP City Council Email Log Still Not Working
Menlo Park, posted by Observer, a resident of the Menlo Park: Central Menlo Park neighborhood, on Feb 19, 2007 at 5:02 pm

What's going on at city hall? - all of a sudden, the email log disappears without explanation and now the link that's been put back up isn't working.

I hate to be a conspiracy theorist, but given all that has recently been going on (UUT, "cool cities," child care controversy, SEUI contract, Boesch leaving, etc.), it sure seems convenient that it has been down!

I also am frustrated with the missing email log; the problems are well into week 2 I think. While I believe this new Council truly values sunshine and participatory government, it's hard to tell given the city's problems with the email log and the overly long agendas and ridiculously long and poorly controlled Council meetings. And don't get me started about the shameful search engine on the city website; that isn't even worthy of the name because it finds almost nothing and when it does it's usually not relevant. I don't believe this is a conspiracy, but I think city management is even more lax than ever. Let's hope the acting (or new) city manager will be better.

I share the frustrations of "AnotherResident," and contacted city staff this morning to let them know of the problem. They've been working on it - it turns out that they've been plagued with technical problems (a server crash), compounded by the resignation of one of their small tech staff.

MP Personnel and Info Services Director Glen Kramer has indicated that restoring this service is a prority, and he thinks they are nearly there.

My sense is that city staff is so overworked and short staffed, due to budget cuts, that any kind of glitch (like a server crash OR a staffers' resignation) can lead to extended outages such as this one - and in this case they had two glitches to deal with.

Hopefully the logs will be back online soon.

The City Council e-mail log is back up and running.

City Clerk Silvia Vonderlinden just left me a message with the news. She blamed several of the technical problems Kathy S mentioned in the previous post for blocking public access to the e-mail log.

I just checked the site, and it appears to be up and running with no problems.
