Michelle Sutton's firing

Original post made by Judy Melvin, Menlo Park: Linfield Oaks, on Apr 29, 2013

It's been a few months since Michelle Sutton was fired from the Gymnastics program. I am worried that the City Manager and City Council have dropped the ball on this one and have failed to follow up after we demanded some answers. First, the City Manager claimed to have conducted an investigation and announced that he supported the decision to fire this teacher who is loved by all.

Then, after some pressure from the parents, he authorized an outside investigator to interview current and past gymnastic teachers and staff... something he previously neglected to do. It's been a couple of weeks since the investigation has been completed and still no word… as if he's trying to sweep this under the carpet yet again. Since taxpayers paid for the investigation, we not only have the right to know the content and opinion of the lawyer who conducted the investigation, but also what actions the City Manager will take to address the issues that were uncovered.

If a mistake was made and Michelle was fired for complaining about a hostile work environment, then it's up to the City Manager to take some sort of action to avoid a costly lawsuit. How much more money are taxpayers expected to shell out for his refusal to look at the facts in the report and do what is right? It seems to me that there has been a lack of leadership. There has been enough bad press for the City over it's refusal to be transparent, it's time for the City Manager to come clean... and clean house!!! The community deserves answers, not just the City Manager saying "I reviewed the report and there is nothing in it to warrant any changes." We need to see the report.

And... one last thing... I heard this thru the grapevine that Michelle has a lawyer who, working on her behalf, tried to mediate with the City Manager. Her attempts evidently fell on deaf ears. By failing to respond to Michelle and her attorney, it now is likely headed toward a costly lawsuit. The City Council needs to hear from concerned residents urging them to read the report that was paid for with our tax dollars and take appropriate action before it costs the City even more in dollars and reputation.

How much did this investigation cost the taxpayers and why would the City try and hide the outcome of the investigation from the residents and the City Council? Seems like they're just going to make the situation worse by trying to cover it up.

As I previously predicted, the bureaucrats will keep their heads down and wait until the whole thing blows over. Assuming, as usual, that peoples attention spans are that of gnats and this too will blow over and they won't have to actually deal with it. Seems people's attention spans may be longer in this case and they may actually have to DO something. God forbid.

To those of you with longer memories: keep up the pressure it's the only thing bureaucrats understand when putting their heads down and hiding doesn't work.

Keep their feet to the fire and you might actually get a true result as opposed to BS. Good luck.

If parents are still enrolling their kids in gymnastics programs, every dollar collected is a vote of confidence in the program and the way the city runs it. Similarly, the Almanac will continue to allow hateful anonymous posts on this forum until residents are willing to boycott and picket businesses that purchases ads on the forum. If you want to live in a sewer, one will be provided for you when you keep paying.
