I'm not a big fan of Mel Gibson the director, nor do I like Mel Gibson the anti-semite. But, Mel Gibson the young actor was fabulous in "Gallipoli", Peter Weir's moving film about Australian soldiers sent to Turkey during World War I. Too bad the Mel Gibson of today saves his most provoking performances for the side of the freeway.

I liked "Braveheart" for its rawness and its pretension to chronicle a conflict between England and Scotland, but I have no plans to see either "Passion of the Christ" or his latest work. I've gotten the impression that they're politically charged and lay bare his prejudices.

Although I'm certainly not "mad about Mel," I agree with Mad About Mel that in his younger days, Mel Gibson was worth paying attention to. "Gallipoli" is one of the greatest movies ever made, for my money, and "The Year of Living Dangerously," which he also starred in, is superb. Is it religion that has caused him to foam at the mouth?
