Menlo Masters collects shoes for charity

Swimmers will not only compete for the best times on Saturday, April 2, but also to collect the most new shoes. The Menlo Masters swim team is hosting a meet to benefit My New Red Shoes, a nonprofit that provides clothing for homeless children. The three-hour event starts at 6 a.m.

Community members can leave new shoes in donation barrels in the lobby of the Burgess Aquatics Center at 501 Laurel St.

Village Pub supports relief effort

Patrons of the Village Pub in Woodside will be able to savor food from the kitchen of Michelin star-rated chef Dmitry Elperin while contributing to the relief fund for Japan on the evening of Wednesday, March 30.

The Pub and its sister restaurants, including Mayfield Bakery & Cafe in Palo Alto, will contribute a portion of their proceeds that day to the American Red Cross for its relief efforts in Japan, hit on March 11 by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and devastating tsunami.

Egypt's uprising topic of talk

Stanford professor Joel Beinin will present a talk, "The Popular Uprising in Egypt," at the Wednesday, March 30, meeting of the World Affairs Council Peninsula Chapter. Mr. Beinin is a professor of Middle East history and the former director of the Middles East Studies Center at the American University in Cairo.

Refreshments will be available beginning at 7 p.m. and the talk is set to begin at 7:30 in the Los Altos Youth Center, 1 South San Antonio Road in Los Altos. The free event is cosponsored by the Silicon Valley Red Cross Chapter as part of its annual informational seminar on International Humanitarian Law.

Cottage tour Friday and Saturday

The annual house tour benefiting the scholarship program for Mills College students from San Mateo and Santa Clara counties is set for Friday and Saturday, April 1 and 2, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. "Charming Cottages of Palo Alto" is sponsored by the nonprofit Palo Alto Area Mills College Club.

Tickets are $35 online, or on tour days only at 3246 Bryant St. in Palo Alto. Go to charmingcottages.org for information or tickets.
