Zeke Brown, Sam Falkenhagen earn highest scouting rank

Submitted by Craig Falkenhagen and Angela Sherry.

Boy Scout Troop 222 honored Zeke Brown, 16, and Sam Falkenhagen, 17, at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Nov. 6 at the First Baptist Church of Menlo Park.

Zeke is the son of Angela Sherry and Peter Brown of Atherton, and Sam is the son of Sally and Craig Falkenhagen of Atherton.

Only 4 percent of scouts attain Eagle Scout, the highest rank of the Boy Scouts of America. An Eagle Scout must receive at least 21 merit badges and organize a service project that benefits his church, community or school.

Zeke led a crew who transformed a garden into an enclosed courtyard setting for his church, St. Bede's Episcopal in Menlo Park. Sam's project involved erosion control and beautification of the hillside adjacent to the baseball field at La Entrada School.

Zeke joined Troop 222 in 2005 after earning his Arrow of Light award in Pack 222. He attended four years of summer camp, including Marin-Sierra, Wente, Oljato and Emerald Bay, and has backpacked in the Desolation Wilderness. He has served in a number of leadership positions, including assistant senior patrol leader.

Sam joined Troop 222 in 2004. He attended three years of summer camp, backpacked 50 miles in the Emigrant Wilderness and 70 miles at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Last summer he attended the Boy Scout National Jamboree in Virginia, celebrating Scouting's 100 years. He has served in leadership positions, including troop quartermaster.

Both scouts are honor students at Menlo-Atherton High School. Zeke plays varsity and tournament tennis. Sam is the kicker on the varsity football team, plays varsity baseball, and is a member of M-A's celebrated jazz band.

Troop 222 has been sponsored by Menlo Park Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years. Current troop membership is around 80 scouts.
