Atherton resident is finalist for national arts award

by Samantha Bergeson

Menlo School senior Kyle Tessier-Lavigne has strummed his way into competing as a finalist in the YoungArts Week program, run by the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts.

Kyle, a classical guitarist and an Atherton resident, is one of about 150 students chosen from more than 5,000 applicants. Students were selected from a range of disciplines in the visual, literary and performing arts.

Kyle will travel in January with the other 150 winners to Miami for a five-day workshop series, conducted by professional artists. He will compete for a $10,000 prize and a spring trip to New York for more educational experiences.

Some of the students will be nominated for the 2011 Presidential Scholars in the Arts, an award issued by the White House to 20 high school seniors. This award is accompanied by the opportunity to perform at the Kennedy Center and exhibit at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

The YoungArts program assists in preparing students for educational and professional experience in the arts. This organization has more than 15,000 alumni, including actresses Kerry Washington and Vanessa Williams.
