Traffic-enforcement drive nets 211 citations

More than 200 drivers in San Mateo County received citations last week as part of the county's Saturation Traffic Enforcement Program, which deploys up to 25 motorcycle traffic-enforcement officers in a particular area.
Eighteen traffic officers made 225 stops and handed out 211 citations from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Belmont, Redwood Shorts and San Carlos, according to Sgt. Don Shepley of Burlingame's traffic division, which is managing the program. Drivers were cited for pedestrian right-of-way, distracted driver, seatbelt and unsafe-speed infractions.
The program is a monthly effort by police agencies, including in Menlo Park, to send a message to drivers to be aware of road rules, Sgt. Shepley said. "The areas we target are identified as trouble spots by police in that area," he said.
Wednesday's enforcement was the second deployment and saw a 35 percent increase in the number of stops and citations from the previous deployment, according to officials.
Police agencies from the cities of Belmont, Burlingame, Daly City, Foster City, Menlo Park, Millbrae, San Carlos, Pacifica, Redwood City, San Bruno, Hillsborough, San Mateo and South San Francisco, as well as San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, are participating in the program.

Henry Riggs is a member (registered user) of Almanac Online Not hard to issue 225 citations that include distracted driving. There isnt a day I don't see a car slow or wander and on passing them see the driver w a hand held device. When the cat's away, the mice will click and drive - not a good era to be walking or biking. Yikes.

If they want to "raise money" as falcon suggests, they'd be able to clean up here, and more importantly, those of us who feel threatened every time we walk downtown and across El Camino might feel a little safer. I say BRING THEM ON.
