Redwood City police will conduct checks for impaired drivers at multiple locations within the city on Saturday, Dec. 29.
The mobile checkpoint will move between undisclosed spots from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., police said. The project is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
Officers will examine drivers for signs of impairment from alcohol or other drugs, and will try to keep delays as short as possible, according to a press release. Anyone caught driving impaired can expect jail time, license suspensions, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, and other expenses that can exceed $10,000, Redwood City police said.
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed that across the United States in 2010, more than 10,000 people died in crashes that involved at least one drunk driver. California crashes accounted for 791 deaths.
"DUI Checkpoints have been an essential part of the phenomenal reduction in DUI deaths that we witnessed since 2006 in California," said Christopher Murphy, director of the Office of Traffic Safety in a written statement.

Posted by Alfred, a resident of the Atherton: other neighborhood, on Dec 28, 2012 at 12:48 pm Why not set one up just outside a Stanford game? It will most likely be in the poorest area. They want to catch sheep instead of those who could beat the wrap. Social injustice is alive and well.
