At 1 p.m. dignitaries will gather to commemorate the construction of U.S. 101 auxiliary lanes between Marsh and Embarcadero roads.
According to Caltrans, the project connects to another segment that will link Embarcadero Road and to State Route 85 in Santa Clara County. The agency estimates that the new auxiliary lanes could cut travel time during commute hours by up to 17 percent.
The Dec. 5 celebration will take place at 190 Independence Drive in Menlo Park. Speakers include council members from East Palo Alto and Menlo Park along with representatives from other local agencies.

Posted by waste of money, a resident of the Menlo Park: Downtown neighborhood, on Dec 4, 2012 at 10:38 pm Is it true that the government spent over $100 million of sales tax money for just a couple of miles of freeway ramps? What a boondoggle. Think of the important projects that were cancelled because of our over-dependence on cars. That amount of money could have gone a long way towards fixing local public education or public transit or health care.

Dunno. Is it?

Posted by give em $, they'll spend, a resident of another community, on Dec 5, 2012 at 12:32 pm Don't even start. Look up the price tag on the pedestrian bridge. We could have funded a private limo service for every student needing to cross the freeway for 20 years for what that bridge cost or, less sarcastically, we could have improved pedestrian & bicycle crossings at willow and marsh - two direct pathways to Facebook commuters etc. Instead we have a huge concrete eyesoar dumping right into people's back yard only used by a handful. What a waste.

Posted by waste of space, a resident of the Menlo Park: Central Menlo Park neighborhood, on Dec 5, 2012 at 12:45 pm How did we go from new lanes on 101 to a pedestrian bridge? The $100 million figure for the lanes was bogus, wasn't it? QUICK! Change the subject!

Posted by Roadwork, a resident of the Menlo Park: South of Seminary/Vintage Oaks neighborhood, on Dec 5, 2012 at 2:09 pm Oops, I missed a piece. My Marsh to Embarcadero leg number, 18M$, was really only for the Sam Mateo county leg -from Marsh to University. The University to Embarcadero leg was another 8M$
Web Link
72M$(Embarcadero/85)+18M$ (Marsh/University) +8M$ (University/Embarcadero) = 98M$
"Waste of money" was pretty much on the mark in my mind - 100M$ for 3.2 miles is a lot for auxillary lanes that don't traverse the exits.
Even though I drive on that stretch of 101 for work every day, I think 100M$ spent on Caltrain would be a much better use of $$.

Posted by Rob, a resident of the Woodside: Emerald Hills neighborhood, on Dec 6, 2012 at 12:35 am Well I can tell you there is a remarkable improvement in traffic during my morning commute across that section. Extending it all the way down to 85 would be great and likely alleviate the main chokepoints on 101 southbound.
Now if we could get evening commute metering lights on the 280 northbound on-ramps at Sand Hill and Alpine and Page Mill the mid-peninsula would be more tolerable!
