Devil's Slide exhibit at history museum
History museum in Redwood City hosts photographic display

Bookmark and Share
A photography exhibit chronicling San Mateo County's infamous stretch of state Highway 1 known as Devil's Slide opened this week at the County History Museum in Redwood City.

The exhibit, called "The People's Tunnel: Highway 1 at Devil's Slide," opens as a $342-million Caltrans project to build tunnels that bypass Devil's Slide nears completion.

Caltrans expects the tunnel project to be completed this winter.Once open, the old section of Highway 1 will be closed to traffic and reopened as a public recreational area.

The photo exhibit highlights San Mateo County's effort to build reliable roads and railways to its isolated coastline, from stagecoach roads, to the failed Ocean Shore Railroad, to the rockslide-plagued Highway 1 that exists today.

The San Mateo County History Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is located at 2200 Broadway St. in Redwood City.
