Police in Belmont continue to look for witnesses to a shooting that took place along a mile of U.S. 101 in San Mateo County on Sunday afternoon.

Three people in a Dodge Charger were hospitalized with injuries from the shooting or the crash, police said. They include a 24-year-old man from Menlo Park who remains hospitalized. A 19-year-old East Palo Alto man and a 23-year-old Santa Cruz woman were treated and released.

Belmont police Lt. Patrick Halleran said information gathered in the wake of the shooting and subsequent crash "indicates that this was not a random shooting." The three in the Dodge Charger appeared to be the intended targets, Lt. Halleran said.

Investigators were trying to determine if the shooting was prompted by a road-rage incident or if it stemmed from another dispute, Lt. Halleran said.

At about 3:30 p.m., the Charger was shot numerous times as it headed south on U.S. 101 near the Ralston Avenue off-ramp in Belmont, police said. The vehicle veered off the roadway and crashed through a construction fence about a mile further south near an off-ramp to Holly Street in San Carlos.

No other vehicles were struck by bullets, and no one else was injured, police said.
