Deputies step up seat-belt enforcement
|
Deputies from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office on patrol in Woodside, Portola Valley and nearby unincorporated areas will be keeping a particularly sharp lookout over the next two weeks for violations of child-car-seat and seatbelt laws.
The 2012 National Click it or Ticket Campaign began Monday, May 21, and ends Sunday, June 3, according to the county Office of Emergency Services.
"Since research shows that seatbelts and car seats save lives, the intent of the Sheriff's Office is to protect people in our communities by encouraging compliance with occupant restraint laws," the statement said.
The California Driver Handbook debunks several myths about seatbelts, including the myth that seatbelts are most necessary on long trips. Half of all traffic deaths occur within 25 miles of home, the handbook says.
