M-A boys' basketball looking for a new head coach

 | Senque Carey was a top national recruit as a player out of St. Francis High and was regarded as one of the nation's best assistant basketball coaches while at Fresno State. The East Palo Alto native, however, struggled as the boys' head coach at Menlo-Atherton High and now is looking for a new job.
Carey was released from his position as the Bears' head coach this week by M-A co-athletic directors Steven Kryger and Paul Snow.
"We appreciate all of the time and effort Coach Carey put into this program and thank him for his services," Kryger said. "We feel at this time it is in the best interest of Menlo-Atherton to go in a different direction with regards to our boys' basketball program. We wish Coach Carey much success in his future endeavors.
"We will begin our search for a new coach in the coming weeks."
Carey just finished his second season with M-A, which struggled with injuries and finished 4-6 in the PAL Ocean Division after being demoted from the PAL Bay Division following a 5-5 campaign in 2010-11.
The Bears failed to reach the CCS Division I playoffs this season after wrapping up a 13-13 campaign with a second-round loss in the Peninsula Athletic League playoffs.
Menlo-Atherton went 13-14 in Carey's first season, which saw the Bears advance to the CCS Division I second round before losing to No. 6 seed Oak Grove. In his two seasons at M-A, Carey was 9-11 in league and 26-27 overall.
Carey was honored by Basketball Times Magazine in 2010 as one of the nation's top 100 assistant coaches in college basketball, after concluding his fifth season as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Fresno State. He also served as an assistant coach at Portland State.
Carey played collegiately for both the University of Washington and New Mexico.

Posted by Truth seeker, a resident of the Atherton: other neighborhood, on Feb 27, 2012 at 4:37 pm Every team sends a representative to the CCS playoff planning meeting in order to get a spot in CcS. Coach didn't go because he had a prior engagement so the spot was forfeited. It wasn't because the team wasn't good enough. If you're a head basketball coach you need to be on top of everything. One coach everybody liked was coach Phil white. That guy texted the players with updates from the CCS meeting. He was on top of his game.
