Kids at Encinal School taught the community what they could do when they put their minds to their chores. And Principal Sharon Burns and teachers at the elementary school in Atherton taught their students that they take their promises seriously when they lined up to kiss Lily the Pig, brought to the campus in all her squealing glory on Friday (May 31).
Ms. Burns and teachers told the students they would kiss a pig if the kids met their $5,000 goal in a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society — an effort they embarked on after fifth-grader Tyler Nelson was diagnosed with lymphoma, according to LLS spokeswoman Melisse Skelton.
Through Chores for Change, students surpassed the goal, raising $7,290.46 and “earning the title of the fourth-highest fundraising school in the Silicon Valley and Monterey Bay Area (LLS) chapter,” Ms. Skelton said in a press release. The kids raised the money by doing chores at home and employing “a host of creative fundraising methods and incentive programs,” she said.
Lily, a 7-month-old Vietnamese pot-bellied pig, was bused to the bussing fest by her owner, Terry Tenzing. Friendly Pony Parties of Half Moon Bay helped arrange the visit.
The LLS raises money for research aimed at curing leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and provides information and support services to patients and their families.
