Alan McGee of Portola Valley is showing his photographic exhibit, "Onions Observed: An Animistic Perspective," during July at the Portola Art Gallery in Menlo Park.
The exhibit revolves around half of an onion, how it changes over time, and Mr. McGee's photographic response to those changes. For the exhibit, he purchased a 10-pound bag of yellow onions to slice.
"These half onions, simply presented against a black background, seem, to me, informed with animism a primitive world view that non-human entities possess a spiritual or supernatural essence," he said. "These onions, over time, took on qualities that catalyzed my imagination."
A reception for the artist will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at the gallery, located on the Allied Arts Guild campus at 75 Arbor Road in Menlo Park. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
