The Menlo Park City School District board will decide tonight (Jan. 14) on whether to hold a special election or to appoint a new board member to replace Laura Rich, who announced her resignation last week.
The matter is on the agenda for the meeting that begins at 6 p.m. in the TERC building of the district offices at 181 Encinal Ave. in Atherton.
Ms. Rich, first elected to the board in 1998, said increasing family demands that require her to be out of town led to her decision to resign from the board before her term ends in December of this year.
Tonight's meeting will be her last as a board member, ending a 15-year run -- the longest tenure of any Menlo Park City School District board member, according to district records.
Ms. Rich said she is likely to recuse herself from the board's vote on whether to appoint a new member or hold a special election for her successor. She said her best guess is that the board will decide to appoint someone rather than calling an election now, given that the seat will be on the November ballot.
