Bird is the word from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Portola Valley Town Center at 765 Portola Road. The Nature and Science Committee is sponsoring Bird Discovery Day, an afternoon for visitors of all ages to talk with local bird authorities and interact with live birds, including an eagle, tropical birds and chickens (in a cage).
There will also be nests, feathers under microscopes, books on birds from the Portola Valley public library, and a veterinarian with information on how to care for birds at home.
You can learn about the different sizes and colors of bird eggs, how to arrange gardens so as to attract birds, and the hazards that birds face in the wild, including West Nile virus.
Representatives from the Audubon Society, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, the Palo Alto Junior Museum and Wildlife Rescue are expected to be on hand, as will the food truck Grilled Cheese Bandits and the fruit popsicle vendor.
